Amelia awoke a few days later and looked around, the swelling in her eyes had gone down and she was able to see. She took a breath, wincing as her the skin on her stomach and collar bone stretched. She licked her lips as a woman looked up from reading the paper, a huge grin on her face. She had deep fiery hair and kind hazel eyes. She introduced herself as Alexandria Wilson, Alexi for short. Amelia said with a small smile, "You were at the warehouse with John." Alexi nodded and Amelia motioned to the paper, "What's so good?" Alexi grinned and handed it to her pointing out the headlines on the front page. WINNING A RACE AGAINST TIME it said and that alone sucked Amelia in.

Blake awoke a few days later...A panic gripped him, he was in the room alone, and he couldn't feel his right shoulder, or his right knee. He was afraid, and he softly called out Amelia's name. His voice was scratchy and sty. Hardly recgonizable aegis own voice...

A nurse came in and sighed, knowing he'd want to see her. She allowed him into a wheelchair and wheeled him across the hail to where Amelia was reading the article for about the fifteenth time. She grinned when she saw him, no...she beamed, her white teeth flashing in a broad grin. "Hey there, popular." she smirked she laid the newspaper on her lap.

He smiled as he saw her. He took charge of the wheel chair and wheeled himself over."Amelia?" He asked softly as he saw her smiling face. He wheeled himself over to her, tears on his eyes as he reached her bedside. He had to resist the urge to touch her softly, just to make sure she was actually there. He repeated her name softly. He was confused when she ed him popular. "Ummm...what?" He raised an eyebrow.

When he reached her bedside she gently took his hand and grinned, "You're popular." She snickered, it was her way of saying he was a hero. She straightened the newspaper and began to read. "Winning A Race Against Time, story by Alaxandria Wilson," she shot a smile at John. "Over the last few days Gotham has been quiet, until Commissioner James Gordon was attacked and robbed. Although the Commissioner was landed in the hospital Gotham’s very own Detective Amelia Raven Smith came to the rescue, who was just been released from the hospital after suffering from a bullet to the heart, nearly. However when Smith arrived on the scene of the attack not all went as she had planned. Detective Smith was kidnapped. At the same time however Gordon called her partner, Detective John Blake who was also in the hospital after suffering a bullet wound to his shoulder and his knee. Despite his injuries and a surgery that would take place later that day to replace Blake’s shoulder and knee, the detective removed himself from the hospital in order to search for his partner. " She glanced at him, "You shouldn't have done that."
She went on, "I had been just taking a walk through the streets when I saw him, limping towards the police cruiser. Concerned for him I rushed to help and only succeeded in plunging head first into an adventure of a lifetime. I hadn’t been ready for the display of love that came from Blake when he received a call after looking at me with his dead eyes. As soon as a voice picked up everything about him changed, he seemed to perk up and his eyes gained some light, but it quickly vanished as he slipped to his knees, which I’ll later learn is a result of Smith’s words being, I quote, “this is my fault and I will finally pay for my crimes”. Blake was crushed by the idea of his partner’s death and with a tear shining in his blank eyes when I asked to help his growling voice replied that I could “help him find his partner” which I agreed to. "A tear slid from Amelia's eye.
She licked her lips and continued to read, "I’ll find out later that in the span of two days that Blake and I spent looking for Smith that she was beaten horribly, she didn’t eat, she didn’t sleep, and she didn’t drink. Blake ate, but it wasn’t a decent meal. He slept but it wasn’t a full night’s rest. He didn’t care that his weakness was causing his body to eat itself alive, just to keep him alive. His hands trembled, he had dark bags under his eyes and he was in pain. But nothing got in the detective’s way and I must say I admire his bravery and courage." More tears slid down Amelia's cheeks.
"The two of us searched every warehouse in Gotham. We tore each one apart looking for any sign of the detective being there. In the end there was one left, and at this point Blake was about dead, but nothing would stop him. We drove to the warehouse and Blake was instantly attacked and dragged further into the darkness of the old warehouse." At this point the tears were pouring.
"There he found Smith, covered in welts made with a leather whip. Both her eyes were swollen shut and there was a nasty slash at the base of her neck. She had broken ribs, a skull fracture, a broken nose and broken orbits. She was a mess, not to mention the bullet wound to her shoulder which had been deepened with a knife and the stab wound at her side. However the thing that stuck out to me was that after all that she still took more pain. When the robber’s gun went off she jerked upwards to protect a weakened Blake from the bullet, taking the slug to the collar bone." Her fingers gently touched the wound, wincing slightly before returning her hand to his.
"After Smith took the bullet Blake started to panic. He challenged the man to take him instead and torture him. From where I stood trying to get away from the iron grip of another thug I could see the rage in his eyes as he hooked his arm around Smith, pressing a hand against the wound, only to panic more when she was shot in the stomach, something he tried to prevent but was unable to. I managed to get away and tackle the thug before he shot John, a shot that would have killed the detective. Despite his condition Blake got up and carried Amelia out of that warehouse." Her stomach clenched and pain jolted through her, the tears still pouring silently down her face.
"Because of Detective John Blake, Amelia Smith is with us today. She is recovering from the torturous three days she spent in the clutches of the thugs. However, I’m sure those mental scars will never fade while the physical ones covering her body will eventually become just memory, pale reminders painted into her skin. But that isn’t the reason I wrote this article, I didn’t write it to let you all know that Gotham is once more peaceful, I wrote to show how strong the power of friendship truly is. Both of these remarkable people were willing to give up their life for their partner. I am honored to have been able to meet such amazing friends. And despite the complaints he’s sure to make, in my eyes, John Blake will always be a hero. Times like there are when you find out who your friends really are, and I’m sure both John and Amelia know that they have a friend in each other." She swallowed and let the newspaper fall into her lap. She tried to brush her tears away but they wouldn't stop.

He help her hand as she read, noticing her tears. He wanted to wipe them away, but did not as she continued to read. He gently squeezed her hand as she read aloud Alexi's account of what had happened. Hearing it, he was shocked that he was still alive. He had felt it, all the pain, but he was so set on the drive to get to Amelia, that he must not have noticed.
When she read on to the part of her wounds, he felt his muscles tighten, causing pain to rip through his shoulder and knee. A grimace crossed his face and he loosened his muscles, painfully slow.
When she read how he was a hero, he sadly shook his head. As Amelia fell into silence, he turned to her, wiping the tears from her eyes. "You're all that matters to me...." He gently caressed her cheek. "But..I'm no hero..." He gently continued to wipe away her tears, his muddy brown eyes, clouded with pain, never leaving hers.

Amelia smiled at him slightly, "Well in my eyes you are." She took his hand and threaded her fingers into it. "You shouldn't have come..." She murmured softly, her eyes, hazy with pain as she gazed into his muddy eyes. She sighed and looked slightly away. "I'm sorry..." she was talking about how she'd broken his heart....

He gently took her hand, threading her fingers into his. "I will always come for my heart..." He whispered softly, turning her head towards him. He gently looked into her eyes, his hand softly caressing her cheek. "There is no need to be sorry. I can, and will wait, forever if I need to." He whispered softly, and he meant it....all of it... Amelia blushed her fingers caressing his cheek. "I love you, John...I love you..." she murmured, her sapphire eyes sparkling when she looked at him. "You don't have to wait at all..." Then, for the first time, she scooted to the end of the bed and pressed her lips to his gently.

He smiled, a true smile, it lighting up in his eyes, bringing a life back to him, more than just seeing her could. He gently caressed her cheek with his hand. "Amelia, you know I love you." He whispered softly. When he felt her lips press on his, he kissed her back softly. He resisted the urge, and failed. He gently placed a hand on her neck, careful to avoid her injuries. He kissed her passionately.

Amelia kissed back with passion. She had been forced over the edge with anger and pain and sadness and never expected to be pulled back. She never expected to be able to say those three words. She never expected it to be so real...so right. It was perfect, the kiss, gentle with passion. Not like Sully's first kiss, hard and urgent, it didn't feel right, it had at the time...but now she knew that all she could taste was the poison setting into a relationship that was bound to fall...despite her best efforts to keep it living. But she was glad it had fallen. If she hadn't lost Sully she never would have met John. If she hadn't lost Sully she wouldn't ever know true love. If she hadn't lost Sully...she wouldn't be the person she was today.

He smiled against her lips. Her love had brought him back from the dead. He gently kissed her more as he scooted closer. He gently ran one hand down her side, letting it rest on the side of her stomach. This was his first kiss, well, his first real kiss. And it was the best kiss he had ever had. He had gone Over The Edge in his depression over his heart being broken, by her. She had saved him, and he had saved her. The article was right, they had really figured out how much of friends they were....how much more than friends they were....
