Personality: {A family man, Gordon values their protection from the evils of the world above all except for justice. Justice comes before all else, and not the "self-serving kind of retribution" justice. Gordon believes that, if at all possible, bringing in the criminal and having them serve whatever sentence given them is the best option of all.

Jim Gordon is also a no-nonsense kind of cop. Between serving in the military and being surrounded by corrupt officers before becoming commissioner, he has cracked down on the structure of the police department. In this manner, he's become a very hands-on commissioner, always wanting to be present for interrogations, crime scenes, and arrests when available. He attempts to keep as many tabs on all known criminal movement, to the point that he loses sleep in order to keep as up-to-date as possible.

When it comes to the vigilante known as Batman, Gordon has viewed him as a "necessary evil" of sorts. While still earning his promotions on the police force, Gordon recognized the vigilante's stunning record for apprehending criminals and, with a corrupt police force being the only other dissuasion, Batman's involvement was a welcome sight. Since recently becoming commissioner, Gordon has not placed any priority in finding out the crusader's true identity; though he believes - with enough effort - that he discover the man's identity, he prefers a stance of plausible deniability while stating that it is a "continued effort" to bring the Bat to justice. }

History: { Jim Gordon was born in Gotham, raised in Gotham, and has only been out of Gotham to go on vacations. He went to school in Gotham. He remembers Gotham when it was vibrant and metropolitan, when its glass spire and gothic overtones were what made it beautiful, not deadly.

At the age of twenty, Jim joined the Gotham City Police Department. He watched as the city became corrupt; he watched as the murder of Gotham's most influential and wealthy couple made it so the city would fall in disarray. He watched, and he vowed to protect his family, and bring Gotham back to its beautiful glory.

Gordon has been one of the few honest police officers in an incredibly corrupt city. Bruce Wayne first met Gordon after his parents died, and he would always remember the then-Seargent's kindness, as it gave Bruce the strength he needed after his parents' death. Seventeen to eighteen years later, after being promoted as a detective-sergeant on the force, Gordon was first contacted by the man who would become Batman. And thus an alliance was born.

This alliance was kept secret from all other police officers, with Gordon proving pivotal in Batman's defeat of Ra's al Ghul. James Gordon's involvement in saving Gotham resulted in his promotion to the rank of lieutenant. He developed a Bat-Signal with the department's spare searchlight to summon Batman in times of need.

Gordon later became leader of GCPD's Major Crime Unit and worked with Batman to try to protect such figures as Commisioner Loeb, Judge Surrillo, and District Attorney Harvey Dent. Unfortunately, the three died, but Gordon's heroic efforts resulted in him being promoted to Commissioner, after assisting to apprehend the Joker.

His loyalty to Batman only strengthened after the vigilante saved Godon's son from Two-Face. Although he had to allow Batman to pretend to be a villain - taking credit for Two-Face's crimes - Gordon still maintained his respect and admiration for the vigilante. More than anyone, Gordon understood the role Batman had to play in Gotham, in being the hero or the villain the city needed.

Slowly but surely, Jim Gordon has been wittling down the corruption of the GCPD and building up a force he can trust and depend on. It hasn't been easy, it hasn't even been very effective -- but at least now, with the Batman and a GCPD that they can begin to trust, Gotham City can sleep.

It's an uneasy sleep, but it's sleep none the less.
