Personality: {The personality of Joker is what probably anyone would expect of a chaotic, insane, apathetic criminal mastermind who enjoys blowing things up and killing people. According to one doctor at Arkham, he has displayed signs of 'deep narcissism', yet is aware of others to such a point whereas he can manipulate with extreme skill. He is unpredictable at best, though has the ability to plan criminal activities as well as improvising them.
He cares very little for the well being of anyone at all - including himself - and will laugh at any injuries that anyone receives. He is sadistic and thrives in chaos. He shows symptoms of being a high functioning sufferer of anti-social personality disorder and has an obvious disregard for laws, rules, and the peaceful order of things. He has a low level of inhibition and is seemingly fearless while driving to disturb the Status Quo of society.
Joker, interestingly, does not see himself as insane. He sees himself as 'ahead of the curve'. It is possible that this is true and that he has a morally nihilistic mindset though has exhibited many signs of failing mental health.
As well as being sadistic, apathetic, fearless and lacking inhibition, Joker is easily obsessed with particular people. Evidence of this is his on-going obsession with Batman and his previous obsession with Harleen Quinzel. He often uses the targets of his obsession though sometimes has a genuine wish to know more about them. This is usually followed by a wish to use it against them, though. He is ambitious, intelligent and unusual. All the things anyone would expect the Clown Prince of Crime to be.}
History: {'5+ sentences here' there's a bit more than that.
Very little can be confirmed about Joker's early years and it often seems that not even he knows what his childhood was like as sometimes he remembers it one way, sometimes he remembers it another. There is no way to find out who he is, either, as he has no ties to the Gotham community. Nothing about him matches any files or records. What he tells people is his origin story differs from story to story, though he has been known to go for whatever works best with his audience.
In one of his stories, his father is an abusive and alcoholic individual who attacked his mother, then the young witness, with a knife. Another version was that his wife was scarred by loan shark enforcers and Joker scarred himself to show that he didn't care about the scars. With the anger that Joker remembers his father, it is a logical assumption that the relationship between himself and his father was not, and could not be considered to be a good one. Other than that, nothing can be guessed or assumed about Joker or his relationship with his family based on what he's said.
Three theories were presented by the GCPD in a report, though those have since been debunked. One theory was that Joker was an escaped Arkham inmate. This was pushed aside due to the fact that his identity has no basis within any records. Another theory was that he was a disgruntled former employee of Haley Brothers Circus and had business with the mob that had turned bad. The last theory was that Joker was a former soldier suffering from acute PTSD, which would explain his demeanour and why he was so familiar with weapons, as well as his combat skills. All three were debunked for various reasons, though.
Through a series of smaller crimes involving robberies, occasional killings and a soon to be infamous calling card, Joker made a name for himself as the Clown Prince of Crime. He soon became known amongst the people of Gotham when he committed a double homicide and armed robbery and later broke into the Gotham National Bank which was a money-laundering front for Gotham's gangs. He broke in as a member of his own group and planned before hand for each of the other goons to slowly kill each other off. Escalating from there, Joker's reputation and ego grew steadily until he attracted the attention of the Batman as well as Harvey Dent, the DA.
After breaking into Gotham National Bank, he gatecrashed a mob meeting and proceeded to offer them his services, telling them that Lau will betray them if Batman got his hands on Lau. During telling them this, and offering himself to them in order to take out the Bat, he annoyed Gambol to the point in which there were two rewards placed on him. $500,000 for him dead, $1,000,000 for him alive so that Gambol could 'teach him some manners first'. This was after Joker opened his jacket to reveal a number of hand grenades tied to a ring that was on his thumb. He left the building after telling them to call him and leaving a joker card on one of the tables.
That night, Joker and two members of his own small gang went to Gambol. Joker pretended to be dead and his members pretended to be the ones who killed him and brought the 'body'. After Gambol checked that it was actually Joker under the garbage bags, he began talking to Joker's goons. At this point, bringing two of Gambol's henchmen down by their ties and leaving them for his own henchmen to overpower, Joker sat up and asked what the reward was for him being alive before telling Gambol a story of how he got his scars. As he was telling it, he put the blade of the flick knife he had into Gambol's mouth before killing him. He then told Gambol's henchmen that they could join his 'team', though there was 'only one spot open right now' and therefore there would be 'tryouts' with a snapped pool stick. He told Gambol's men to 'make it fast' and left them to it with his own gang members.
After Lau was captured by the Dark Knight and handed over to the police, the Chechen and a hesitant Sal Maroni hired Joker to kill the Bat. Joker then kidnapped someone who'd been inspired by the Batman to take on the crime in Gotham, a man called Brian Douglas, and filmed him being humiliated and terrorised before telling Gotham, and Batman, that the Bat had to turn himself in and, every day he didn't, people would die starting with Brian Douglas. He then went on to kill him, at which point the tape ended in static. Joker then made sure the body got to the mayor's office with a scarred smile mimicking Joker's and the make up. Pinned to the body was a joker card with the words 'will the real Batman please stand up' seemingly typed on it with a typewriter.
The next day, his victims were Judge Surillo and Commissioner Lobe. Janet Surillo, the judge presiding over Dent's indictments, was blown up in her car, littering the road with thousands if not millions of joker cards, while Gillian Lobe was poisoned when drinking either whiskey or brandy.
That night, Joker gatecrashed Bruce Wayne's fundraiser for Harvey Dent, intent on killing the DA. He threatened an elderly party-goer and was then stopped by Rachel Dawes. It was then that he told a second story of how he got his scars, now saying that it was to make his wife feel better about her own, scarred appearance. As he finished the story, Joker was kicked in the groin. He made a small comment about her having 'a little fight' in her and then got into a fight with the Batman which only ended when Joker grabbed Rachel hostage and told Batman to take off his cowl. When the Batman didn't, Joker shot the window out behind him and held Rachel under the threat of pushing her out of the now broken window. The Batman told Joker to 'let her go', which Joker did... Out the window. While Batman was saving Rachel's life, Joker and his gang made their escape out of the penthouse.
He went on to kill two more people, whose names made up the name Harvey Dent. He also left a copy of the news paper for the next day, which had an obituary for the mayor of Gotham. On the day dated on the news paper, Joker attempted to kill Mayor Anthony Garcia while in disguise as an honour guard without his make up on. Lieutenant Jim Gordon was hit instead and Joker escaped.
The next day, Harvey Dent went on television and told everyone that he was the Batman. He was arrested and Joker set out making plans to kill Harvey with his clowns playing key rolls in it. That night, the plan was put into place. Joker and his goons came up against the real Batman, though and, just as Joker was about to unmask the vigilante, he was arrested by Gordon after shooting the van used to transport Harvey with a machine gun, a shot gun, and attempting to shoot it with a rocket-propelled grenade, though the Bat in his Batmobile got in the way and took the blast. In addition to this, he also got his goons to string up the police helicopter that came for air support, got his truck flipped by the Batman and shot a car or two for fun.
Being arresting, Joker also set up for Harvey Dent and Rachel Dawes to be kidnapped by a couple of corrupt cops while in the GCPD's custody. In an interview with Batman, which involved his head being slammed into the table, his hand being hit, being slammed against a wall and pinned to it by Batman, then being slammed on the table, then headfirst into a wall, and then punched a little more while he explained his view of the world and eventually gave up the location of both hostages, though having given Batman only enough time to find one. It's possible that he mixed the locations up on purpose, though soon ended up with a small number of the police force left.
Upon being left with one of the police men in the interrogation room, Joker got into a fight with said police men and took him hostage before asking for his phone call, confusing the other cops. He dialled a number, which was a cellphone he'd planted in one of his goons with explosives, and blew half of the major crimes unit up in order to escape. Once Gordon got the news that Joker had escaped, after Rachel Dawes had been blown up and Harvey Dent's face had been burned on one side, he realised that Joker had wanted to be caught and locked up in the MCU.
And so the Clown Prince of Crime was free again.
After escaping, Joker met up with the Chechen with Lau present due to having taken Lau with him when he escaped the MCU. When he met up with the mob leader, he was presented with his reward of half of the mob's smuggled money, which was what he'd said he wanted for killing the Batman. He then burned the money and Lau, who was on top of it, and betrayed the Chechen while saying that Gotham deserved a better class of criminal and that he was going to give it to Gotham. Once the Chechen called him a freak, Joker mimicked him and then tossed a knife to one of his men, saying 'why don't we chop you up into little pieces and feed you to your pooches? Then we'll see how loyal a hungry dog really is!'. It's safe to assume that this actually happened. He then phoned the news station and told them about his vision of a world without Batman and stated that he'd had a change of heart. He then said that if Coleman Reese, who was going to reveal the Batman's identity to the whole of Gotham, wasn't dead within the hour, he would blow up a hospital.
During that hour, Joker disguised himself as a female nurse and spoke to Harvey in hospital. He started with talking about what had happened to Harvey and Rachel, saying that it was nothing personal, and talking about how he was an 'agent of chaos' and how everything that was done was to 'upset the established order' and ending by telling Harvey that chaos was fair while pressing a gun to his head. Harvey flipped his coin to decide whether or not to shoot Joker and Joker was free to get Harvey out of the hospital, leave the hospital himself and blow up the buildings that made up the establishment.
After blowing the hospital up, he and his men hijacked one of the buses which had doctors, patients and the local news crew on board. Once they were away from the hospital, Joker did a broadcast to the whole of Gotham, telling them that he owned the city, and the streets, and anyone caught in Gotham come nightfall would be under his ruling. He also told people that they could leave at that point, but those using the tunnel and bridge would be in for a surprise.
The population of Gotham, starting with the criminals that Harvey Dent locked away and a large group of civilians, began to ferry away from the city. The ferries were loaded with explosives, which the people on the ferries had no idea about. Gaining access into the intercoms and killing the engines on both ships, Joker began a 'social experiment'. He told both boats that they had explosives on board, and a detonator for the other ship. If one of them blew up the other, he would save the people on the ship that remained. If neither chose, he threatened to blow them both up. While this was happening, Batman was trying to find Joker and fought his way up the unfinished skyscraper that Joker was in.
After realising that the hostages were dressed as Joker's men, and Joker's men were dressed as hostages, Batman saved the hostages and got to Joker. After he arrived, Joker sent the Chechen's dogs after him, then attacked with any weapons in the environment, a metal pole and a knife. Joker seemed to have won after a few minutes as he pinned Batman to the scaffolding that was up and waited for one of the ferries to blow the other up. When neither did, Joker checked the time and got irritated as he realised that neither were selfish enough to do it. He pulled out a detonator for both ships and was going to detonate it when Batman shot the detonator out of his hand with one of his wrist-blades then threw him over the edge of the scaffolding.
On the way down, Joker laughed until he was saved by Batman and pulled back up to come face-to-face with the Dark Knight again, though upside down this time. He then revealed that he couldn't kill Batman any more than Batman could kill Joker and acknowledged that Batman was incorruptible before taking about his 'ace in the hole' - Harvey Dent. Batman, infuriated with Joker, left him there to hang while laughing. The SWAT team who'd been in the skyscraper too found him and took him to the Arkham Asylum for the Criminally Insane.
It was here that Joker met Harleen Quinzel, an intern at the time who had been looking to make money off of Joker. Joker, having listened to one of the doctors warning her not to try making money off of the inmates, told Harleen that her name could be reworked to 'Harley Quinn' and said that it was the kind of name he would tell all of his secrets to. Harleen begged the doctors to let her be Joker's doctor for months before she was allowed too. Over the time she was his doctor, Joker manipulated her into believing that he wasn't a bad guy, but was like a lost child who was trying to get the world to laugh at his antics despite everything he'd done prior to getting in Arkham. After months of interviews and slow manipulation, Harleen Quinzel became Harley Quinn - a sidekick for Joker who was convinced that she was in love with him and him with her. She broke Joker out and, since leaving Arkham Asylum, Joker has been working with her and his 'boys' - including two hyenas called Bud and Lou that Joker got Harley - to continue his reputation.}
