Personality: {A very quiet and reserved man, Matthew has a unique personality which is the mix of a councilor and everyone's older brother - unless he doesn't like that person. If he dislikes someone then he's less likely to care about their problems, though will still care if they get injured. Matthew is smart, logical and usually calm. He can be logical to such a point wherein certain things don't really make sense, though he's often able to adjust to the situation in which something is illogical and figure out what is meant.
Matthew is also caring. He's almost caring to a fault. He would rather himself getting hurt than anyone else - even people he dislikes. Due to this fact, Matthew has been taken advantage of in the past. This, along with the paranoia that he's partially inherited from his mother, has caused him to be cautious around people and suspect almost everyone of having another reason to be nice to him rather than the simple fact that they might actually like him. Another reason for this is that he's slightly insecure and often believes less of himself than other people do. In the event that he ever be complimented, Matthew doesn't argue despite not always agreeing with the compliment and merely accepts it as politely as possible.
This is another way that he is caring to almost a fault. He watches what he says a lot to avoid upsetting, angering or otherwise causing discomfort to someone. He is unwilling to get involved in confrontation due to a slight anxiety he suffers from. He often goes so far as to completely remove himself from a situation in which he feels could end up with him in an argument or otherwise in the spotlight. Matthew is an introvert, pure and simple.
Except, it isn't so simple. He also has trouble with possible Avoidant Personality Disorder, which means that he is socially inhibited, feels inadequate, and is over sensitive to criticism. It also means that he has an inability to be social for fear of rejection, discomfort and/or anxiety around others. He isn't overly sensitive to criticism, often taking it on board unless it is blunt and rude, at which point Matthew can unintentionally find himself taking offence to said criticism. This isn't often, though, as he'll usually keep anything about himself secret unless asked.}
History: {Born on the twenty-seventh of February, 1984, Matthew is the oldest of two children. Both children were born to Diana and William Reid. Three years after Matthew was born, his sister came into the world. Jane Reid grew up with Matthew as her main guide as their mother was mentally ill with paranoia and schizophrenia and their father was a successful businessman. Despite her illnesses, Diana tried to be a good mother to the children and a good wife to William. The couple argued a lot, though, as William found it difficult to cope with Diana and her illness and Diana had moments where she was unable to so much as tell someone the date or the day.
Due to the fact that their parents were often busy arguing with each other, the Reid children became dependent on one another for emotional support when things got tough which, due to their parents and their genetics, included bullying and being woken up during the night by shouting from downstairs. Jane would regularly sleep in Matthew's room for comfort, which Matthew didn't mind as it meant that his sister would be happy and a happy Jane meant one less thing to worry about. That was always the theory, anyway. A couple of times Matthew had to lie to his parents about his sister's behaviour in school - mostly when she used to beat up the people who were bullying him despite them being three years apart in age.
And so that was how their childhood was until Matthew hit double figures. When he was twelve, his sister pushed him in front of a bus during an argument while they were walking home from school. The bus driver saw him, thankfully, an managed to stop the bus before it would have run him over. Matthew had stormed home after thanking the bus driver for actually stopping without speaking to Jane at all. Once they got home, Matthew began to plot his revenge. Unlike Jane, Matthew wasn't someone who'd try to injure someone else so he decided to try scaring Jane half to death instead. As his sister was scared of wolves, Matthew got a mask and gloves that went with a werewolf suit from one of his friends, though didn't tell them why he wanted them, and hid under her bed after their dinner one night. As Jane walked into the room, Matthew jumped out of his hiding space and found himself face-to-face with his sister and father. Needless to say, Matthew got into a bit of trouble along with getting hit in the face by his sister when he'd jumped out. The story of how exactly he got a black eye was extremely entertaining to his friends when they got it out of him after begging him for hours...
Also at the age of twelve, Matthew learned how to fire a gun. His father taught him, thinking that Matthew would have to defend himself/his family at some point though Matthew never saw the point in learning how to fire a firearm. It was one of the only times that Matthew wasn't in a foul mood with his father, and that was never because he was enjoying it. It was more because there were guns and Matthew was a little worried that if he annoyed his father then he'd be shot by the man. That wasn't to say that every day was bad with his father around, but Matthew had never been able to get along with the other man. Along with the arguments, which Matthew understood were equal when it came to who started them, his father had a very frigid idea of how a boy should act and what he should like while his mother had never minded so long as he wasn't a bad person. In a small, mental rebellion, the Reid siblings never bothered to get his acceptance when it came to who they were and what they were like. Matthew rebelled against this a little more than Jane from an early age, though more because William didn't expect as much from Jane and so she had less to rebel again. Regardless, they still did so.
Jane got a small, ginger cat when Matthew was fifteen. William bought it for Jane's birthday and, by that night, they found out that Matthew was allergic to cats. The reactions weren't very bad, actually mainly eyes becoming watery and sneezing whenever the cat got near him, but they'd figured out quickly what it was and stated that the cat would not be allowed upstairs due to the allergy. Jane regularly broke this rule though only to take her cat, Hotspot, to her room during the evening. The cat never stayed in the house at night, despite Jane's best efforts. Matthew took great joy in letting Hotspot out as the cat seemed to have realised that Matthew couldn't be near him and began to follow him around.
The following year, Diana and William had an argument which had a number of other effects. William left the family and moved to New Jersey, saying that he couldn't stay while Diana wasn't looking after herself. It was now that the children realised that she hadn't been taking her medication. Despite this, Matthew still punched his father in the face before William left, almost broke his knuckles because he hit his father on his cheekbone and stormed out of the house in the hopes of not punching anyone again. He returned later that night. After William left, Matthew had to look after Jane and Diana.
When he was eighteen, Matthew had a girlfriend called Brittany. At the school prom, Jane gatecrashed and announced to everyone there that Brittany was pregnant. How she found out was beyond Matthew (who didn't know anyway) and Brittany. It was only when she tried to say that it was Matthew's child that anyone realised that she was lying as they hadn't done anything like what's required for a child to be made. The guy she'd cheated with apologised to Matthew, despite Matthew not knowing the guy beyond name while Brittany went off to attack Jane for revealing the secret. She didn't end up doing much, if any, damage to Jane as Jane cheerfully reminded her that she really shouldn't be fighting in her condition. A small amount of the people in the prom found that quite amusing, including Jane's boyfriend/Matthew's best friend.
After he left school, Matthew went into college. Just before he decided what he wanted to do in school, Matthew had to put his mother in an asylum. He was sure that he couldn't help her while she was at home, with Jane needing attention as well due to still being in school, and so had to send her to the asylum in order for her to get the help that she needed. This was a deciding factor in his college choice, which became psychology in order for him to understand what was happening with his mother and also so that he could help her once he finished in college. This happened four years later, during which time he visited his mother at least once a week - more than once around her birthday and Christmases - with Jane.
Upon finishing college with a psychology degree after four years, Matthew then went on to intern and later get a job in the asylum in order to help treat his mother. His sister wasn't happy about it, though she had never been happy about her mother being in an asylum anyway, which made things difficult but she never said anything except that she didn't like it after the first time she told him it was a bad idea as the pair got into an argument the night that she tried to talk him out of it.
Over the next two years, Matthew continued to treat his mother along with another doctor who'd already been treating her before Matthew got the job. Along with treating his mother, Matthew treated other patients who got along well with him. One week, he was told that his hours when he was treating his mother were being brought down as the doctor of another patient was on maternity leave and so the doctors who remained had to look after that patient as well as their current ones. During the maternity leave, Matthew's mother died. It was suspected that she'd stopped eating, though there was no evidence of this.
Immediately being blamed by Jane for sending their mother to the asylum in the first place, Matthew went back to work as quickly as possible. Over the following weeks and months, though, Matthew began to drink. He and his sister were getting into more arguments than ever before, which was partially tied to her suffering bi-polar disorder though also to the grief of having lost their mother. Jane left while Matthew was at work, though he'd been sent home early for unintentionally endangering the life of a patient as he'd been a little bit drunk on the job. Matthew's boss told Matthew that he would still have a job, but that he needed some time off to get his life sorted. Matthew saw the letter that Jane as left when he got home and was left in the house they'd grown up in, which was in Las Vegas, alone. Around five months later, Matthew's friends pushed him into getting himself sorted out.
He decided against going back to the asylum, and instead sorted out selling the house and moving out of the state. Matthew decided that he wanted a fresh start and found that there was an asylum in a place called Gotham which needed a staff member. He moved to Gotham as soon as he could and got a job at Arkham Asylum not long after moving. He has now been in Gotham for two months.}
