a hero can be anyoneEven a man doing something as simple and reassuring as putting a coat around a little boy's shoulders to let him know that the world hadn't ended. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Jim was pacing, he was waiting for Richard Grayson to come and pick up his daughter. He didn't know what to think about Babs dating someone, he was a little protective of her. (No Jim. A LOT protective of her. God get it right.) He just didn't want anyone to hurt her. He knew how broken Amelia had been after Sully and didn't want the same to happen to Barbara if Dick hurt her like that.
From what Barbara had told him, Dick was a good kid but, Jim decided that he'd be the judge of that. He knew that when the boy got to the house he would be having a serious talk with him. He wasn't going to be rude, nor was he going to be mean, he was just going to get his point across that no one was going to hurt his daughter and that he'd kick their asses if they did.

Barbara came down the stairs in a nice green shirt and blue jeans. "Dad, he's not evil. You don't have to look like you're waiting for the Grimm Reaper." She laughed happily as she walked to her father's side.
She smirked as she held out aspirin in her hand. "Thought you might need these, Mr. Stressful." She laughed and forced them into his hand. She went to the kitchen, her red hair bouncing as she grabbed a glass and started to fill it with water for her father.

Dick pulled up to the Gordon Residence in his car before finding a park. Turning off the car, he got out, putting his keys in his pocket and looked up at the house. Dick knew that going into this house he would be put to the test, mostly when it came to the commissioner, Babara’s father Jim Gordan. Now Dick did not have a problem with the old man but Jim might and even though he and Bruce are friends that does not cut it. It doesn’t even cut it if Dick is the adopted son of Bruce Wayne. All he had to do was impress the man but be respectful to him and so should Jim since Barbara’s there.
Dick walked up to the home and up the steps before ringing the doorbell. He stood and wait as he thought about how Jim would treat him. Jim’s a good man for the people of Gotham and since he’s met him as Nightwing, Jim isn’t like the rest of the dirty cops here or in Bludhaven. He’s an honest man, a good decent guy with a heart of gold and cared deeply about Barbara, someone so passionate. The door opened and Dick smiled, seeing the commissioner of all people. “Ah Commissioner Gordan, it’s good to see you. I am Dick Grayson here for your daughter Barbara”, he told him

a hero can be anyoneEven a man doing something as simple and reassuring as putting a coat around a little boy's shoulders to let him know that the world hadn't ended. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Now, Jim knew that he wouldn't always be around for Barbara, and was glad that she'd found someone who would love her and take care of her when her father was gone. Age was one of his greatest weaknesses and he was beginning to notice the small things that constantly reminded him that he was getting older. His had a persistent ache in his back that wouldn't leave him alone and his hair seemed to have more silver with each passing day. He was rather forgetful now a days, nothing huge..yet...but just the little things, like forgetting to throw away the spoiled milk or go out and get groceries, but still it was the beginning of a much bigger problem.
Retirement hadn't even come into his head, despite those little signs of his growing age. But now, as his daughter slipped down the stairs, handing him the Asprin, he realized how grown up she looked. The smile on her face brought out her high cheek bones Her eyes sparkled in the light of the sun streaming through the front door windows and her waves of fiery red fell down past her shoulders with grace. The shirt she was wearing, a pretty bright forest green, accented the curves of her body. For the first time, it seemed to hit Jim that his little girl wasn't much of a little girl anymore, but a beautiful young woman.
He had smiled at her when she came down the stairs, a chuckle slipping from his lips at her words. "Just looking out for you, sweetie." He said softly, smiling at her, his voice betraying him by expressing his exhaustion. That was another thing. He barely slept, only about three to four hours a night. Half of it was work, and the other half was that damn pain in his back. He'd tried nearly a hundred different pills, nothing seemed to do the trick.
Commissioner Gordon went after his daughter when she went into the kitchen. He watched her pour the water into the glass, her hands steady. That was another thing he had noticed, he caught his hands quivering slightly at times. He didn't know why put hoped it was because of the lack of sleep and not something else. Or maybe it was just his increase in age. He didn't want to think about retiring or anything like that. He wanted to believe he could continue doing his job for a few more years despite the fact he'd been working at the GCPD for nearly thirty-three years now.
He accepted the water glass from her and downed the Asprin, one of the pills almost getting caught in his throat, but he dislodged it with a gulp of the cool water. He could feel the cold liquid seeping down his throat, taking the pill with it and he sighed, setting the glass down. "I'm glad you found someone, sweetheart." He smiled at her, going around the table and kissing the top of her head gently, once more recognizing the beautiful woman she was turning out to be and couldn't help but smile, his eyes shining with held in tears.
At that point, the doorbell rang and the commissioner left his daughter's side to get the door. He unlocked it and opened it.Standing before him was a boy, Barbara's age, with dark black hair and startling blue eyes. Ah, Commissioner Gordon, it's good to see you. I am Dick Grayson, here for your daughter, Barbara."
Well, thought Jim optimistically, At least he's got decent enough manners. Gordon let a half smile lift his lips as he held out his hand. "Pleasure to make your acquaintance, Dick, I've heard a lot about you." Once they had shook hands, Jim opened the door, waving Dick inside. "Do come in." He offered a faint smile, holding the door open.

Barbara smiled at her father. "I'm not five anymore dad." She laughed very quietly. She knew it was true, but she really hated reminding her father of that. She knew he knew he was getting older, and frankly she knew it too. The brown of his hair slowly peppering with the silver hairs of age. She smiled, knowing she would get to see him more once he retired, but she didn't want him to be miserable. No, she didn't want that at all.
She took a seat at the table after he took the water from her. She rested comfortably on the chair, looking over as her father went to the door. She knew who it was before he opened it. It was her lover. Dick Grayson. She smiled happily as she heard his voice. He could always make her smile. It struck her that her father had never met him, and she cursed herself mentally. She was actually surprised as her father let him in. "Hey Dick!" She waved from the table.

The two of them shook hands. Well at least he didn’t try to crush it. He smiled and nodded his head before walking inside and hearing Barbara’s voice. “Hey Barbara!”, he said as he smiled and waved right back at her. He looked at Barbara in her green shirt and jeans with the sun reflecting on her so bright. So beautiful. Dick thought to himself. And very sexy. He thought to himself again and thank god Jim did not hear him say that out loud. That old man would give Dick the snake eye and it would have been game over, lights out, that’s it, over, done, finished but not with Babs around.
He walked up to Barbara, still smiling before softly kissing her on the cheek. He made sure that Jim would not see that much of it, which could make the commissioner raise his eyebrows in curiosity. “You look good”, he whispered in her ear before standing next to her and turned around, facing her dad. Dick was wearing blue jeans, black shoes, a jacket, and a nice white button t-shirt see through that featured his muscular abs. It wasn’t showing too much though, so it should be no problem, but this Gordon we are talking about.

That was good. He arched a brow as he watched them, but carefully made his face go blank. If he was going to make an expression it was going to be a good one, and confusion certainty wasn't a good one.
The commissioner wasn't sure how he felt about that shirt the boy was wearing, but he chose to say nothing. He wanted to have a word with Dick alone, he wasn't going to say what he wanted to in front of his daughter, she might think it too harsh and he didn't want that, not at all. He wanted her to be happy, but then he just wanted to make sure that this boy was as good as she told him he was.

Barbara smiled at him. Her eyes moved to his shirt and she smiled faintly. She reminded heraldry to tell him that it had been a daring move to pull with her father. She smiled more as she rose from the chair, moving and hugging him softly, a very true smile on her face. "You don't look too bad yourself." She teased with an easy grin, her hand softly falling down to trace his abs, she didn't know how he, or her father, would react, but she did it anyways.
She kissed his cheek softly, in a similiar way to how he had. She loved him, and she wanted him, as well as her father, to know it. She slowly let her arms drop from the hug and she turned, looking at her father. She leaned back on Dick gently.

Dick stood there and waited for Jim to say something. He knew that wearing the shirt was a risk but at the same time, it was like she was going to all over Dick, not even in front of her father. He liked it when Babs would just touch him. Her touch brought a feeling of comfort and relaxation, unlike the other woman in Dicks' life. As Babs leaned into Dick, he slowly and quietly wrapped his arm around her. Not tight or hard, just soft. Though the man was careful not to do anything out of the blue and just play it safe.

He remembered a time when he and his...ex-wife, Ela, were like that. A faint ache overcame him as he through of Ela, he missed her dearly but he still had his daughter, and he would do anything to make sure she remained safe. He knew that Dick would help keep her safe, the boy obviously cared a lot about her from what he displayed.
He pretended her hadn't seen his daughter run her hand down the front of Dick's stomach. "Would you like anything to drink?" He asked, clearing his throat, running his hand back through his greying (and thinning) brown hair. He wondered if his voice was as exhausted as he felt, and hoped it wasn't. He didn't want Barbara to worry.

Barbara smiled as she felt his arm go softly around her waist. She enjoyed it very much. She leaned back on him a little more, sliding her hand over his and lacing her fingers into his. She grinned, leaning her head back on his shoulder and turning her head to gently kiss his neck.
She looked at her father. She smiled at him, but she knew what he was thinking. About her mother. She sighed, and gave him a look of: She was a fool for leaving you. When he offered the water, she bit down on her cheek. He sounded so tired. She gently eased herself from Dick's arms. She went to her father's side, and pulled out a chair for him. "Here, you have a seat. I'll get us all something to drink." She said gently, concern in her bright emerald eyes.

He knew that look, she'd given him it several times. He knew what it meant too. She's a fool for leaving you. But to tell the truth, he didn't blame Ela for leaving. He hadn't really been much of a husband or father. He devoted himself to his job, but he did it to keep them safe. He wanted them to leave in a safe place, that's all he had ever wanted. All he ever wanted was for them to be a happy family like they had been once.
He sighed, she had caught the exhaustion in his voice. "Babs, I'm fine, honey, really." He gave her a soft smile. His back aching, he went and filled up glasses with water from the pitcher in the fridge. He handed one to Barbara, and then offered another to Dick.

Dick saw how much Gordon was aging, getting all those grey silver hairs. Bruce wasn’t aging that much, which he should be, and Dick didn’t know if it was a formula that kept him young or what. It made him wanted to ask Bruce, what’s your secret? He would probably say, I’m Batman. Dick was young and has a bright future ahead of him in his roles, not only in Gotham but Bludhaven too. He could never see anyone replacing Jim Gordon as police commissioner. Jim knew the law and seen his experiences, he wanted to make Gotham a safer place.
When Jim asked if Dick would like anything to drink, Nightwing shook his head, not feeling thirsty at all. “No thanks, I had a big meal before coming here but thank you for asking”, he told him. Then he saw Babs concern about her father’s aging and how he was handling things. It made Dick smile on how much Babs loved her father and without him, she wouldn’t be the strong woman, thanks to her dad. It made him wish his mom and dad were still alive. Though Dick would have to keep living until he couldn’t live anymore in his life.

It felt like someone was sitting on his chest, squeezing his heart. The pain in his back ran up his neck into his jaw, as he worked it, rubbing the bones not sure why it was hurting him. His left arm felt as though millions of little needles were being pushed into it.
He pushed his hands against the counter, trying to catch his breath. He put a hand against his chest, feeling his heart beating turbo speed. It was too fast. His legs felt weak as his heart began to gradually slow beneath his finger tips. It began to flutter, and he didn't have time to react to that before darkness rushed into his vision and his legs buckled, sending him crashing to the floor...
(he won't die. i promise.)

Barbara was watching her dad with careful eyes. She was worried about him, and she noticed how out of breath he was just from walking to the other counter. She bit her lip hard, taking all of her willpower not to go to her father's side right then and there.
When he slipped off the counter and hit the floor a strangled shriek came from her lips. She dashed away from Dick and dropped to her knees at her father's side. "Dad!" She cried grabbing at his hand. "Dick call an ambulance!" She cried, checking her father for a pulse and not feeling it...
