"No!", Dick said as he could hear Barbara's words and that was it, he could not take more of this."Come on Barbara, hang on, help's almost here!", he told her. Dick was not afraid of anything, he wasn't afraid to die but maybe he was afraid of not finding love. It was Babs who first opened her heart out to Dick when they first met on the rooftop, the one where Batman and Dick met the commissioner. He could see her but Jim warned the young man to not bet his life on it, which made Dick scared.

J I M G O R D O N! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Jim shook his head, taking her hand gently in his. He squeezed it reassuringly, and to keep her awake, keep her focused on something. "Talk to me, Babs, talk to me...focus on my voice, just don't let go. Please." His voice screamed with the need to keep her living as he went on, trying to distract her from the pain and the darkness he was sure that was swimming through her vision.
"Do you remember before your mother left?" he began gently. "How you wouldn't eat dinner before I came home? How you'd come tearing down the stairs and jump into my arms?" he smiled faintly at the memories, but the frown returned bringing with it signature thoughts of depressing subjects. He didn't know if he'd ever hug her tightly or kiss goodbye before leaving for work. After this, he didn't know if he'd ever hear her use a voice that wasn't faltering in pain.
However, despite the thoughts swarming his head, he pushed on, "Do you remember all the games you and James would play? Or maybe you two were just simply getting on each other's nerves? I'll never forget coming home to that family...Ela cooking in the kitchen, the savory smells of her dish wafting over, the twins playing some sort of games with those little cars they couldn't have enough of, and then you. The very first thing I'd see when I stepped into the house was a blur of red and then I'd be nearly knocked off my feet...I need you to be there when I come home...because you're my daughter, my beautiful, beautiful little girl..."
The tears were pouring now, each word faltering in sorrow and agony. He could hear the ambulance. "Just a bit longer," he whispered. "And you know that in my heart isn't good enough..."

Barbara looked from Dick to her father. Her movements slow. Painfully slow. Her eyeswl were duller now then they had ever been before. Blood continued to pour from the large wound in her chest. It seemed like nothing would be able to stop it. But she knew she still had to try. Fer her father's sake. For Dick's sake. For her sake as well.
She felt the faintest of smiles pull on her lips. "W-w-when m-m-mom w-would t-t-try and s-s-send m-m--m-me to b-b-bed b-b-b-before y-you got h-h-home...." she didn't have the breath to finish her thought as she grimed in horrible pain. His voice was soothing, but it did nothing to alleviate her pain..n

Tears started coming from Dick's eyes, the both of them. He would not have any joy in his life without Barbara. Of course, he has support from Bruce, Tim, Hailey and the other members of The Bat Family but it was something about Barbara that made him keep going. Holding onto her hand and giving it a soft squeeze, all he could was try to be strong but couldn't do it. "No no no...don't go, please don't go and leave me....I need you" , he told her as he lowered his head and kissed the knuckles of her hand. It was like the song that Michael Jackson would sing "Heaven Can Wait" and it sure can wait for a long time because it would not go down like this.
"I will never forget all those time we spent together, just...just goofing off and being ourselves. After my parents died I...I thought I wouldn't get that chance...to have something else...to have love. You give that to me every day when we talk on the phone after the day was over. I would hear about what you were doing, then you would hear about my so called boring lifestyle in Bludhaven", he told her as he chuckled weakly. Dick sucked at stuff like this but he didn't care what the commissioner thought. He loved his daughter but wished he could of taken that bullet for Barbara, he wished he could of traded places with Barbara. She will always be his angel, looking out for him wherever he was but it couldn't end...not like this.

J I M G O R D O N! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Jim smiled faintly at her words, just a small twitch of a smile, hardly big enough to call it a smile. He winced, "I wish I could take the pain for you..." He said softly, he meant it - every word. He never wanted her to hurt. Never. This, this...this just wasn't something Jim would be able to live through if she died.
He kissed her cheek. "Just hold on, sweetie...please..." He glanced at Dick, his words sending more tears trickling down his cheeks. "I promised you I'd walk you down the aisle someday, Babs, I can't do that if you're not here...." he whispered shakily.

Her head lolled from her father to her lover. She looked at him, listening to his words. She couldn't get her tongue to work to say the words she needed to say. Instead she took the effort to intwine her fingers with his. Her hand giving his a very very weak squeeze as she looked into his eyes. She felt her own tears come fasted as she listened. So many things she wanted and needed to say that she couldn't get out... She moved her lips, mouthing out: I love you. Because she could no longer physically speak. She kept her eyes on him, willing Jim to understand.....

He mouthed the words I love you right back to Barbara. "Shh...it's okay...you don't have to say anything, keep your strength up....just don't go" he told her as he continue to hold onto her hand. Tears still coming down from his eyes, as all he could do was just close them, and pray to God to give Barbara strength so that she can live on. He wanted Barbara to be his wife one day, so they can get married in front of their family and friends. Maybe have some of their own kinds, running around, flying throughout the house, learning acrobats or agility, all those things. But to loose her like this would be unacceptable to him. It's like someone hit you with a sledgehammer so hard that you fell down and could not get back up. "I love you so much", he told her and it didn't matter if Barbara got sick and tired of hearing it because Dick loved her to death. He wish he could take away that pain but it would not be that easy.

J I M G O R D O N! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Jim looked away from his daughter and Dick, the tears coming faster now. "I'm so sorry..." he murmured, his voice faltering. "I should have been there to protect you." He felt horrible, he felt as though he had failed her in some way. He felt as though he should have been the one to get hit with that bullet. He had lived his life, she had hers still ahead of her. It just wasn't right.
He couldn't bare to look back at her, but brushed the blood from her face, closing his eyes painfully. Even if she made it out of this he would never forget this image...holding her close to him as she bled out. He was powerless to cure her pain and stop her bleeding. He was helpless and he hated it.

Barbara coughed and continued to hold Dick's hand. She wasn't going to leave either of them alone. Not this time. She looked at Dick for a moment longer. She knew she wanted to spend her whole life with him. She wanted to have kids as well, but she didn't know if she would make it that far. She wanted to, but her world continued to darken. Her breathing became harder, more labored. She gave his hand another gentle squeeze.
She rolled her head to look back at her father. She knew this must be killing him and she hated it. Hated it more than anything. All she wanted to do was hug him. Tell him she was alright, and that she would be okay. But she couldn't. And even if she could, it would be a lie.
She tried to say something. Anything. All she wanted to do was comfort him. But she couldn't. She tried to say something, but could not find the words. She looked at him as her eyes slowly closed...

Dick hears the EMT’s coming through everyone as he looked at Barbara. “Ok, listen Babs, the EMT’s are here and they are going to help you. Hang in there and don’t…give…up”, he said to her as Dick got up. He did not want to but the EMT’s would just tell him to back off and let them do their jobs and better yet Dick didn’t want to argue. He looked at the commissioner before speaking. “Commissioner Gordon, go with you daughter. I will catch up behind you guys”, he told him before looking down at Babs, seeing her in enough pain. As the EMT’s went to work, only the people close to Barbara could pray and hope that she would be able to make it through all of this.

J I M G O R D O N! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - His eyes met hers, holding them, feeling her pain running through him. He wouldn't stop blaming himself for the reason that she was hurt. Perhaps if he had taken the shot a bit earlier she wouldn't have been hurt. Thoughts like those tortured him and tore at his mind. Why couldn't he have pushed the trigger? Was it because he didn't have a clear shot? He couldn't remember.
"Babs..honey, please...don't close your eyes, keep them open...please..." He looked up, the EMTs were there, lifting her from his arms and placing her on the stretcher, rushing her towards the ambulance. Jim glanced at Dick at the boy's words. He gave a shaky thankful smile, quickly shooting out a thank you as he went to the ambulance, slipping inside and taking her hand in his. He closed his eyes, tears dripping down his face.
