Personality: {Carter has always been an emotionally stable person. Growing up in Gotham City is definitely a cause of that. He is rather calm when it comes to his reactions, but getting him angry is something that shouldn't happen to often. Though it is hard to get him angry, he explodes when his angered is triggered. He likes to think of himself as the butt of every cruel joke this world has to offer. He will find himself going against goofy or silly criminals or tough ones that usually require outside help, but that just makes him more dedicated for his cause. He could sit down and give up on protecting Gotham, but that will never even be a thought to him.
Carter usually isn't self conscious, but there is something that will make him awkward. The large scar on his chest is something that leaves him paranoid when his shirt is off. It makes it hard to do one of the things he loves to do most, which is swimming.
Carter is usually collected while in public, but around women, he gets awkward. He can easily flirt or be flirted on by another man, but have a woman say anything that can be slightly perceived as flirtatious, it is all over. Stuttering, awkward conversations, and quick escapes are normal when he encounters a flirty woman.
Though his schedule is sometimes long and grueling, he finds solace in his video games and nights at his favorite clubs. He is usually in his apartment or down in the safer clubs around Gotham. He likes how it lets him escape from the madness around him for a few hours. It helps keep his mind clear and his emotions stable.}
History: {Carter has lived his whole life in Gotham. It's something that he's not usually proud of admitting. Regardless, Gotham was always his home. From a young age, he learned of the horrors of the "real world." Gotham was always notorious for its insane criminals and arguably insane heroes. Many nights he would hear gunshots or cries for help. He was afraid. He was afraid of the violence, afraid of the criminals. He vowed that he wouldn't give into the fear, that he would someday protect the city of Gotham. That dream wouldn't come for a while, though. The rest of his childhood was spent with his dad, since his parents were divorced while Carter and his sister, Jenny, were little. It wasn't a bad life. Carter's father, Mark, would spend time at his job as a lawyer, then come home and take care of his two children. There were nannies in Carter's life, they all were nice, but easily forgettable.
One of the hardest parts of Carter's life was when he came out of the closet to his dad. It was the middle of his high school career and his father would hear nothing of it. Long nights fighting and crying from both parties came and went, but nothing was ever solved. The relationship with his father was permanently stained. His sister was supportive, but his sister couldn't keep him in the house. He was asked to leave as soon as he started college. But this wouldn't be for a few more years.
It was around his senior year in high school that he learned of his powers. He was sitting next to a classmate in his math class, bored and sleepy. He was thinking that the class was boring, which it was. He didn't expect to get an answer back from the person next to him, but he did. He was shocked to learn that he could communicate with his mind, but once the initial shock went away, he would practice his telepathy. He eventually used it to his advantage. Other powers slowly came with time. He could sense when others were lying to him. It was a nagging feeling that he continued to experience when people would give him little white lies. He experimented on it by asking his younger sister to purposefully lie to him. He asked her to lie about the Presidents. The nagging feeling would only come when she lied. It was then that he learned that he could sense lies. It was as if his life was calling to him and telling him that he needed to be a detective. It was then he went to college.
He didn't want to become a cop immediately, he wanted to study law and criminal justice. He wanted an advantage over his competition. He was dedicated to his cause and wanted to get there as soon as he could. He also learned of his power to control light in college, after blinding his classmates when he failed a test. At first, he was skeptical, he thought that it was merely a freak accident, but it happened again. After a tough break up, Carter was sitting miserable in his apartment. As he would walk into different sections of the apartment, the lights would dim. After the incidents with the light intensifying, he knew then that he could control light. Later, he learned of his powers of Psychometry. He was given an opportunity to study under a real detective as a part of his program in college. The detective he was with asked Carter to examine some of the evidence. Carter picked up the murder weapon with his gloved hands and saw a vision. It was a woman in a red silk dress. That's all he saw. He informed this to the detective, who immediately remembered of the main suspect. She was wearing the same dress on the day she was questioned by police. She was eventually charged with the murder and Carter identified the new power after searching for it on the Internet. That power was Psychometry. He added the stress of controlling his new powers to his daily life and came out of college with a Criminal Justice degree and enough stress to break down into tears.
Jump a few years and Carter is now a detective. He was investigating a drug ring when a man came up to him in the middle of the day and attacked him. Carter wasn't fast enough to draw his gun and defend himself. The psychopath had a long blade and swung at Carter with amazing speed. A long cut appeared on his chest and began to bleed. Without thinking, he instinctively pulled out his gun and shot into the man. At point blank range, Carter did not miss. The man died there. He was a patient at Arkham Asylum. He escaped and ran into the streets, his favorite weapon ready to end someone's life. He picked the wrong person to mess with. Carter ended his life that day, but the cost to Carter was high. He had to take off of work for a few weeks. It took some therapy and a long surgery to get him back to normal, but he eventually moved on.
Today, he is still paranoid about his scar. He still works at the Gotham Police Department and has been a detective for a few years now. He is more cautious when he is on the field, but he still loves doing his job. The insanity of Gotham cannot break his vow to protect the city.}
RP Sample: {It was another long shift at the Gotham Police Department, but someone had to do it. Carter was that person. He normally didn't do patrols, but the department was a little understaffed and Carter could use the extra money. It was a long time since he was in a patrol car, but he never forgot the basics. He saw things on these streets that won't ever let him forget his time as a patrol officer.
He had a partner, but she wasn't very talkative, she was probably in the same position as he was. Sometimes silence is golden, anyway. He was driving along the streets, but the night seemed quiet. Usually, the streets are always bustling with criminal activity, but it was oddly empty. Carter knew that it was suspicious, but he continued to drive around the streets of Gotham in silence.
He drove around for about fifteen more minutes before he saw two people that would make his night instantly difficult. They were two men dressed in clown costumes. They may have been cronies to The Joker, but they could also be just some insane people out for a night of fun. It was a good chance either way, they are all in Gotham, after all. He turned to his partner and said, "Hey, we have clowns, literally, we better deal with them before they raise any hell." She looked at him and agreed.
Very quietly, they pulled over near the clowns and got out of the car. They got out of the car and cautiously approached the clowns, their hands ready to draw their weapons. The clowns looked at the two of them and gave a synchronized laugh. It was rather unsettling, but the two of them have definitely heard worse. Carter decided to speak up before his partner. "Hey, what are you two doing on a night like this? Are you two coming back from a party or something?" Apparently the clowns took offense to this and started swearing at him. The next thing he knew, Carter's face was full of cream. One of the clowns found it funny to throw a pie at the poor detective. Immediately, he wiped his face and went after the one who threw the pie. The other clown tried to step in, but his partner had her mitts on him. The two clowns were arrested and thrown into the back of the car. The two would be taken in for assaulting an officer. Carter truly did nothing wrong to deserve this, but it was probably better that those two were off of the streets, anyway.
Carter would make sure the two were in the back seat, he would wipe of his face as best as he could, but his face was still sticky in the end. The two clowns in the back were giggling and playing gags on each other the whole way back to the station. Carter could do nothing but sigh, he knew that it was going to be a long night.
